The Lenovo G450 is a 14-inch screen laptop designed for buyers that are on a budget but still want a laptop that is of decent quality and portable enough to take places outside of the home or office.  The Lenovo G450 could be a good laptop for students as they certainly have to be cost conscious and portability is necessary to be able to easily carry a laptop in your backpack.  I recently found the G450 for a great price so decided to pick it up and try it out for some of the school work I do.  

Lenovo G450 is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processor , 14.0-inch WXGA LED Backlight TFT with 1366×768 resolution, 4GB or 3GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB or 250GB Hard Drive Storage (5400 RPM), a NVIDIA GeForce G 210M with 512MB of VRAM or Intel HD Video X4500, DVD burner, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 6-cell battery, 1-year warranty and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

The Intel Pentium T4300 dual core processor that comes with the IdeaPad G450 clocks in at 2.10GHz, although it’s not branded as a more fancy Core 2 Duo processor, the Pentium T4300 actually performs well, So you have no need to worry about the G450 being underpowered if you get the Pentium T4300 processor. In fact, I recommend this processor because it is a lot cheaper than the G450 with the Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.40GHz processor.


Overall I found the performance of the Lenovo G450 to be really quite good, especially for a budget laptop that has a low price of around $500. There is never any slow down when using the computer, though the most I demanding thing I did was watching HD video on sites like YouTube and Hulu.com, the processor had no problems keeping up with the demanding flash decoding that has to be done for HD video.

The Acer Aspire 4740 / 4740G is available in Core i3, i5 and i7 flavors and starts at S$1,498, though the actual street price is S$1,098. What you get is a 2.13GHz Core i3 processor, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD and a discrete 512MB Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics platform. Going up the scale, S$1,698 (street price: S$1,398) nets you a 2.26GHz Core i5 chip, 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. More importantly, the Core i5 processor sports the Intel Turbo Boost feature (not available with Core i3), which automatically overclocks the laptop during intensive computing. Along with a discrete graphics card, the Aspire 4740G is a competent entertainment machine which is also capable of midrange gaming to boot.

The notebook boasts a Dolby Home Theatre audio system with stereo speakers and a 14-inch LED-backlit panel. The latter comes with HD-ready (1,366 x 768) resolution in 16:9 aspect ratio, which makes it great for viewing widescreen movies. The machine also comes with HDMI output if you wish to hook it up to a larger display. From past experience, laptop speakers rarely did justice to audio tracks, so you may need to plug in headphones if you want some real Dolby Home Theatre love.

The Acer Aspire 4740/4740G also comes with a biometric fingerprint sensor. Since it is not a business laptop, the Acer does not sport HDD encryption or a TPM security chip. We suggest using the sensor for quick logins and not as a security feature to lock down your data.

Since our last review of this notebook Lenovo has added a new high-brightness screen option as well as quietly updated the keyboard structure to hopefully limit some of the flex we noted in our first review. The Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 ($879.99 list) is about as familiar as they come, comfortably sporting all the ultrabook trappings without doing much distinguish itself, unlike its contemporary, the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 , whose extra-wide display sets it apart from the pack. That said, the U845-S406 is a decent ultrabook for everyday users looking for a well-designed, reasonably priced system. 

The U845-S406 measures 0.8 by 13.5 by 9.1 inches (HWD). Its relatively light weight of 3.6 pounds inches it toward the heavier end of the ultrabook realm. The U845-S406's combined Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz processor and 6GB DDR3 RAM yielded steadfastly average results in our benchmark tests.
